Beginning in 1805 he taught school nine winters, the first wmter in B o s - ton, the others in Barnard, where he was m. In June, 1815, he started from Bethel for Ohio and arrived in Bronson, 30 July, after a journey of BIZ weeks. A year later he moved on to the farm in Bronson (being the first actual settler in that township), and passed the remainder of his days there. In Sept., 1886, the Firelands Historical Society, of which he was a member, celebrated his one hundredth birthday anniversary at his house in Bronson, at which more than two thousand people were present. On another page will be found a facsimile of a letter which he wrote when he was 101 years, 4 months and 16 days old. In 1861 he wrote : "I am one of the busy sort — improve as many hours at something as any man I ever knew. More than thirty years ago it is said I read more than any other man in the county. Many big stories have been told here, perhaps that is not the largest. I have the best flower garden of any farmer within my acquaintance ; commonly raise about an acre of broom com and make from three hundred to five hundred brooms a year.'^ In Jan., 1883 : "The 21st of last September closed my ninety-sixth year.
